The Cardiff Centre for Ethics, Law, and Society was established in 2003 to provide an interdisciplinary resource for people interested in ethics, with an emphasis on stimulating real collaboration on investigating ethical issues between people coming from different fields of interest. The 33 papers here in its first volume combine a selection of papers and commentaries that appeared on its website during the first year, and a selection of papers that were presented at its first conference, in Cardiff in June 2004. They cover biomedical and medical ethics, sustainability and the environment and other broad societal issues, human rights in current global contexts, and news items that arose during 2003 including the decision to invade Iraq and separating adult conjoined twins.
